Why it exists

The L322 is one of the most capable and characterful luxury 4x4s ever made, and also one of the most misunderstood. Because it was designed under BMW but built under Ford, and switched engines and electronics several times across its life, the year and era matter enormously when buying, running or repairing one. Get that wrong and an L322 can be an expensive mistake; get it right and it is a remarkable car for the money.
